Private Robert Coleman Herbison

 

 

Robert Coleman Herbison (or Harbison) was born on 31 January 1898 at Drumfin, Kirkinriola, Ballymena, County Antrim, the second of eight children of farmer John Herbison and his wife Lizzie (née Coleman). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Drumfin with his parents and siblings.

Herbison enlisted in the North Irish Horse at the beginning of February 1918 (regimental number unknown). He remained with the regiment at its reserve depot at Antrim until 1919, when he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

On 7 May 1920 Herbison sailed from London for Australia, eventually settling with his family in New Zealand. He married Nelly Smith there in 1925.

Herbison died at Timaru, Canterbury, on 28 December 1976.
